HAIR WEAVE EXTENSIONS

WHY DO WE NEED WEAVE EXTENSIONS

A client came to me the other day to have a training consultation. We got talking about the reason for her training and it transpired she had been through very traumatic times with her hair experience from various hairdressers. These experiences had helped her decide to maintain chemical-free natural hairstyle.
Unfortunately her decision to maintain natural hair has also exposed another problem. She has found out that it was difficult to find a professional natural hair specialist in her location who could give her the special care that her natural hair needed. Each time she paid a visit to regular salons, she was told to apply relaxer chemicals or texturizers in order to be able to work with her hair. When she explained that she preferred her hair natural, they then offered her other options such as thermal pressing with the hot comb. When she wanted protective hairstyles, they suggested hair weaving and braiding styles that were very poorly and unprofessionally done that these styles left her hair completely damaged.
The problem here is that most of these stylists have no knowledge of how to work with the natural virgin Afro hair. But worst of all, these untrained and uneducated so-called stylist are ignorant of the fact that they need training in order to offer their clients better service. They are fully aware that if they take up training, they could offer reliable and glamorous service to their clients and yet choose not to spend money to improve on their knowledge rather they prefer to make quick money,  and cause so much damage leading to hair loss and alopecia on clients.

This is where my discussion with my client was centred. On further discussions with my client, it had become apparent that she was frustrated with the nasty experiences she had been through that she now wants to be in charge of styling her own hair. This was the reason she wanted to take up training. I was still a bit curious about her decision when she decided to show me the hair she was wearing. At this stage, she took off the hat she was wearing and showed me the hair “weave” she was wearing. To say the least, this hair was shocking. This hair had cost her £80 about $140, had only been done 2 days prior to her visit and she was too embarrassed to show it off hence the reason for wearing the hat. I pleaded with her to take some pictures in order to talk about it and also use it as a case study of “what not to do with clients”.
This is only one of the many cases where client’s experience unprofessional service from untrained hairstylist. Do you have similar experience? Have you been through a bad experience with an untrained stylist? We will like to hear about your experience.

What is Hair Weaving Extensions? Hair Weaving is the stitching of hair extensions on a base of Cornrows onto a client’s head with needle and thread. This is one of the oldest forms of adding hair extensions to a head. It originated from Ancient Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh as was worn by Queen Nefertiti. Only the rich could add additional hair onto their head.
Are there Different Types of Hair Weaving? Yes. They include – full cornrow weave with closure; Sew-in Track weave, interlock weave, designed cornrow weave, micro braids designed weave, natural parting weave, extensions natural parting weave, lace front weave etc.
Who can wear weaves? Weaves can be done on all hair types but stick only to adult and not children as most stylists tend to hold the scalp too tight. All styles of weaves can be done on Afro hair type but on Caucasian hair, your best bet is to stick with the Sew-in Track weaves as they are more realistic. Never put a full cornrow weaves on Caucasian hair.
Are weaves healthy for hair? Yes weaves are healthy and protective when done on a healthy head of client’s hair. They are also healthy when done by a specialist and a qualified trained hairstylist. Do not stick to only one way of designing your cornrows for the base as it affects the way your hair responds to you. Do not hold the scalp too tight as it causes alopecia on your client’s hairline. Where possible advice your client to come back to you for a taking out service as it leads to damaged /patchy scalp on your client. Caution** Do not apply weave on clients with damaged thinning hair as it causes the hair more damage. Most clients with damaged hair hide under a weave. This should not be the case as a weave does not solve the problem. Seek specialist advice for your situation.
What are the types of extensions used for Weave? Synthetic and 100% human hair. We recommend human hair. It is only recently, that the hair weave industry has turned to using virgin natural remy hair extensions. The virgin hair extensions range from Indian hair (cut from real people who sacrifice their hair to the temples), Malasian, Chinese, Eurasian, Brazilian, Mongolian, Thai, Peruvian, Cambodian, Russian, Spanish, Italian hair etc. We do not recommend using synthetic hair for weaves as it does not give you various heat styling options.
What are the Benefits of Weave Hair Extensions? Beauty, protection of your natural hair, ability to change your hair textures without chemical damage, instant hair length – as hair grows about 13cm a year, change of hair colour without chemicals, ability to cut your hair to a quick style without cutting your own hair, versatile look to suit your mood, transition from chemical, flexibility to style hair , protection from harsh weather etc.
Time to put in: Takes between 3 to 5 hours depending on cornrow base, stitch, cut and style.
Wear Duration: Between 6 – 8 weeks depending on maintenance and care.
Care: Make big plaits/ braids at night, cover with satin or silk scarf and cleanse often at least 2 weeks with mild shampoo. Dry hair completely with hooded dryer or hand dryer otherwise hair goes mouldy and becomes smelly.
Price: Depends on stylist experience, expertise, quality of hair in use, hair cut style and client’s unique requirement.
