KIM KARDASHIAN AND HAIRFINITY HYPE HAIR GROWTH

KIM KARDASHIAN & HAIRFINITY HAIR GROWTH HYPE

It wasn’t long ago Hairfinity came to London to launch their hair vitamin with no other celebrity endorsement than Kim Kardashian and her sister Khloe.

kim kardashian and hairfinity

kim kardashian and hairfinity

As a person this would mean nothing to me as I know major businesses hype up their products with celebrity endorsement in order to increase awareness and of course grow their brand.

As a hair expert and educator, this cannot be ignored for various reasons.  Clients with major hair problems who are struggling to grow their hair have now been fed with imagination and make believe that their hair will grow like Kim Kardashians’ and in no time too.

kim kardashian in hair extensions

kim kardashian in hair extensions

This is fraudulent – running with people’s imagination and feeding them with lies. If this were about anti-aging and health care; advertising standards would have been after this company with laws to force them to tell the truth about their product.  I find this line of advertising a bit too much to deal with at least for the ignorant.

I have no personal problems with Kim Kardashian. She is absolutely gorgeous and I adore her in her own right. Her business acumen is also enviable in every way. She has grown an empire that is beyond imagination. What I will not agree with is lying to the public especially on hair growth. If she was asked to give celebrity endorsement for hair extensions or wigs, she would have been perfect for the job. For someone who’s image like the rest of the celebrities including myself occasionally depend on wigs and hair etensions; need to tell the truth to their audience and stop feeding people with tales and lies.

kim's hairloss

kim’s hairloss

For another point, Kim is struggling with her natural hair as the excessive hair extensions has taken a toll on her hair. Would Hairfinity tell us that her hair problem have been solved hence the need for the hair vitamin? If this is the case then we have to see the roots of her hair to be convinced and for how long did she take this tablets to give her the growth she needed.  If there is no truth about this, then this is simply unfair to gullible people who believe every hype that is thrown at them.

Reading so much about Hairfinity gives me reason to wonder what the hype is all about. This product contains same vitamins as the rest of the hair growing pills so using Kim does not bring anything new to the table –

B-Vitamin complex nourishes and supports a healthy scalp and hair growth. Biotin helps produce keratin, increases hair elasticity, and protects the hair from becoming dry. It also helps thicken the hair to give the appearance of fullness. Antioxidant supplements such as Vitamin C are believed to stimulate hair growth by enhancing the immune function and improving scalp health at a cellular level. Vitamin D helps prevent hair shedding which is critical to a voluminous fuller head of hair. Silica (Horsetail Extract) helps to maintain collagen and hair elasticity to help keep hair lustrous. The sulfur provided by MSM is required for healthy collagen and keratin, which are essential to healthy hair growth.

GENUINE ADVISE TO GROW HAIR

All of us seek beautiful hair and especially now every woman want to be like the celebrities hence Kim Kardashian is chosen to be the face of Hairfinity. We can all help our hair to stay healthy and grow without going the route of popping too many expensive pills like Hairfinity. If you are not one for hair extensions and wigs which gives quicker result like Kim, then there are things you need to do to avoid the hype and grow your hair naturally.

It starts from inside with eating the right food. Healthy food inside makes us beautiful and healthy on the outside. This is what Hairfinity and the rest hair growing tablets will not tell you. This is called hype and business marketing.

healthy foods

healthy foods

Some of the simple things you need to include in your daily life include the following:

  • Eat protein rich foods as hair comes from a protein called Keratin.
  • Drink lots of water as it is not only for the functioning of the body but also flushes out toxins.
  • Healthy fats – olive oil, canola oil, omega 3 fatty acids etc
  • Fruits and vegetables are all some of the things to consider and many more.

Best Vitamins for hair growth

  • Spinach – contains iron, zinc and essential minerals
  • Carrots – contains Biotin (essential vitamin for hair regrowth)
  • Onions – rich in zinc, iron, biotin
  • Sweet potatoes – contains beta carotene
  • Tomatoes – contains anti-oxidants
  • Garlic – contains sulphur
  • Beetroots – contains lycopene (stimulates hair growth)
  • Curry leaves – contains keratin
  • Oranges – beta compounds

While we do not support hype and confusion on how to grow hair, we also know that the hairstyles you wear, the products you use on your hair and the attention you give to your hair will all add up to either help your hair grow or completely damage your hair.

TOP 5 TIPS ON HOW TO GROW NATURAL BLACK HAIR

TOP 5 TIPS ON HOW TO GROW NATURAL HAIR

We constantly get contacted by Black women all over the world for guide on how to grow their natural hair.  These questions vary hence we have made it our business to add our  focus on educating Black women in particular on hints and tips of how to care for the natural hair.  We are always creating videos on our Youtube channel to help people as well so please visit youtube and search worldofbraiding  channel to find out more.

natural black hair

natural black hair

Generally most people believe that the natural Black hair does not grow or when it grows; it does not grow as quickly as they would want.  Generally Hair grows at an average of ½ inch per month (about 1.2cm per month).  This comes to about 13cm a year.  You will be able to retain length and notice growth in your hair based on how well you treat your Black hair.

Here are some basic 5 tips to help grow your natural Black hair:

healthy foods

healthy foods

1. START WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE:  Hair grows from inside and hair is a fiber that is part of our cells which grows from the subdivision of our cells in the hair follicles.  For this reason, we need natural healthy food that the body can easily break down for digestion in order for our hair to grow.  The foods we need for hair growth are fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts and wholemeal foods.

2. PLENTY OF WATER:  Due to the unhealthy lifestyles we are forced to live with – synthetic foods, processed foods, genetically

drinking water

Drinking water

modified foods, toxins in the air etc, the body is constantly battling with toxins which do not encourage healthy body for hair growth.  To solve this problem, the body therefore needs lots of water for detoxification, lubricate food for digestion, aid digestion and reproduce the cells for hair growth.  We also need lots of water to hydrate the hair so it does not become too dry.

moisturising products

moisturising products

3. NATURAL & MOISTURISING HAIR PRODUCTS:  After the hair has grown out of the follicles, it needs care in order to avoid breakage.  The natural Afro hair is coily and naturally dry due to lack of sebum travelling down the hair strands.  Due to the coils and dryness of the Afro hair, it tangles itself and breaks easily with little manipulation.  Use of wrong products such as sulphates in Shampoos, silicons in conditioners, chemical relaxers, dyes and use of heat etc cause the hair more dryness which lead to more breakage. Start using natural moisturising oils to help make the hair supple, easy to manage and grow quicker.  These oils include jojoba oil, castor oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, shea butter, argan oil, broccoli seed oil etc.  They contain active properties that help stimulate blood flow and make hair grow as well as contain moisturising properties that make the hair manageable and easy to care for.

4. MANIPULATION:  When the natural hair has grown out, it requires less manipulation to avoid breakage.  Handle with care as natural

two strand twist

two strand twist

hair is a very delicate fibre that breaks easily. Less manipulation means less combing, pulling, tugging, tucking, ponytails, clips, blow dryer, flat irons, tight braiding, tight weaving etc.

5. PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES:  When the hair has grown out, you do not need to leave it hanging out all the time as it requires time and attention to care for it.  You need healthy natural protective hair styles to retain your length and style.  These styles include 2 strand twist, single plaits, cornrows, braids with extensions etc to help to grow and retain its length.  These styles reduce  manipulation.  Remember not to hold the scalp too tight as it leads to hair loss and alopecia.

TOP 5 PROTECTIVE NATURAL HAIR STYLES FOR WINTER

YOUR TOP 5 RECOMMENDED PROTECTIVE NATURAL HAIRSTYLES FOR WINTER

As winter approaches our hair and skin starts to suffer.  A bad hair day becomes a bad hair season with such issues as frizzy hair, extremely dry hair, breakage due to lack of moisture etc.  Winter is a good hair’s enemy as it gives us a really bad hair time.

Some of the problems we deal with range from:

  1. Dryness caused by blustery winter winds, snow, icy cold weather  making the air frigid with very little moisture causing our hair to become brittle, dry and break easily.
  2. Heated appliances all around us – these heaters have a very drying effect on our skin and air.
  3. Use of heated hairstyling tools makes matters worse with blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons etc.  Chemical processing during winter should be avoided as it depletes the protein in our hair and leaving the remaining hair structure to struggle for moisture which leads to excessive breakage at the least opportunity.
  4. Hat head is another issue we deal with as we are constantly trying to retain heat on our head so we end up stressing our strands of hair under the winter hat.

We at the Natural Hair & Extensions Professionals from World of Braiding & Extensions have been inundated with enquiries on what is best for the winter hair days.

We are proud to give you our 5 top recommended Protective Natural Hairstyles to keep the dry wind out of your hair during the winter months as well as leaving you looking glamorous for the season ahead.

HAIR WEAVE EXTENSIONS

WHY DO WE NEED WEAVE EXTENSIONS

A client came to me the other day to have a training consultation. We got talking about the reason for her training and it transpired she had been through very traumatic times with her hair experience from various hairdressers. These experiences had helped her decide to maintain chemical-free natural hairstyle.
Unfortunately her decision to maintain natural hair has also exposed another problem. She has found out that it was difficult to find a professional natural hair specialist in her location who could give her the special care that her natural hair needed. Each time she paid a visit to regular salons, she was told to apply relaxer chemicals or texturizers in order to be able to work with her hair. When she explained that she preferred her hair natural, they then offered her other options such as thermal pressing with the hot comb. When she wanted protective hairstyles, they suggested hair weaving and braiding styles that were very poorly and unprofessionally done that these styles left her hair completely damaged.
The problem here is that most of these stylists have no knowledge of how to work with the natural virgin Afro hair. But worst of all, these untrained and uneducated so-called stylist are ignorant of the fact that they need training in order to offer their clients better service. They are fully aware that if they take up training, they could offer reliable and glamorous service to their clients and yet choose not to spend money to improve on their knowledge rather they prefer to make quick money,  and cause so much damage leading to hair loss and alopecia on clients.

Disgusting unprofessional Hair weave

Disgusting unprofessional Hair weave

This is where my discussion with my client was centred. On further discussions with my client, it had become apparent that she was frustrated with the nasty experiences she had been through that she now wants to be in charge of styling her own hair. This was the reason she wanted to take up training. I was still a bit curious about her decision when she decided to show me the hair she was wearing. At this stage, she took off the hat she was wearing and showed me the hair “weave” she was wearing. To say the least, this hair was shocking. This hair had cost her £80 about $140, had only been done 2 days prior to her visit and she was too embarrassed to show it off hence the reason for wearing the hat. I pleaded with her to take some pictures in order to talk about it and also use it as a case study of “what not to do with clients”.
This is only one of the many cases where client’s experience unprofessional service from untrained hairstylist. Do you have similar experience? Have you been through a bad experience with an untrained stylist? We will like to hear about your experience.

Here is our feature on Hair Weaving.

FEATURES OF WEAVE HAIR EXTENSIONS

Kelly Rolland in Hair Weave

Kelly Rolland in Hair Weave

What is Hair Weaving Extensions? Hair Weaving is the stitching of hair extensions on a base of Cornrows onto a client’s head with needle and thread. This is one of the oldest forms of adding hair extensions to a head. It originated from Ancient Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh as was worn by Queen Nefertiti. Only the rich could add additional hair onto their head.
Are there Different Types of Hair Weaving? Yes. They include – full cornrow weave with closure; Sew-in Track weave, interlock weave, designed cornrow weave, micro braids designed weave, natural parting weave, extensions natural parting weave, lace front weave etc.
Who can wear weaves? Weaves can be done on all hair types but stick only to adult and not children as most stylists tend to hold the scalp too tight. All styles of weaves can be done on Afro hair type but on Caucasian hair, your best bet is to stick with the Sew-in Track weaves as they are more realistic. Never put a full cornrow weaves on Caucasian hair.
Are weaves healthy for hair? Yes weaves are healthy and protective when done on a healthy head of client’s hair. They are also healthy when done by a specialist and a qualified trained hairstylist. Do not stick to only one way of designing your cornrows for the base as it affects the way your hair responds to you. Do not hold the scalp too tight as it causes alopecia on your client’s hairline. Where possible advice your client to come back to you for a taking out service as it leads to damaged /patchy scalp on your client. Caution** Do not apply weave on clients with damaged thinning hair as it causes the hair more damage. Most clients with damaged hair hide under a weave. This should not be the case as a weave does not solve the problem. Seek specialist advice for your situation.
What are the types of extensions used for Weave? Synthetic and 100% human hair. We recommend human hair. It is only recently, that the hair weave industry has turned to using virgin natural remy hair extensions. The virgin hair extensions range from Indian hair (cut from real people who sacrifice their hair to the temples), Malasian, Chinese, Eurasian, Brazilian, Mongolian, Thai, Peruvian, Cambodian, Russian, Spanish, Italian hair etc. We do not recommend using synthetic hair for weaves as it does not give you various heat styling options.
What are the Benefits of Weave Hair Extensions? Beauty, protection of your natural hair, ability to change your hair textures without chemical damage, instant hair length – as hair grows about 13cm a year, change of hair colour without chemicals, ability to cut your hair to a quick style without cutting your own hair, versatile look to suit your mood, transition from chemical, flexibility to style hair , protection from harsh weather etc.
Time to put in: Takes between 3 to 5 hours depending on cornrow base, stitch, cut and style.
Wear Duration: Between 6 – 8 weeks depending on maintenance and care.
Care: Make big plaits/ braids at night, cover with satin or silk scarf and cleanse often at least 2 weeks with mild shampoo. Dry hair completely with hooded dryer or hand dryer otherwise hair goes mouldy and becomes smelly.
Price: Depends on stylist experience, expertise, quality of hair in use, hair cut style and client’s unique requirement.

THE SINGLE PLAITS BOX BRAIDS

THE SINGLE PLAITS BOX BRAIDS HAIR EXTENSIONS

Single Plaits Box Braids

Single Plaits Box Braids

Hair Braiding is the interweaving of strands of hair to form a rope for Single Plaits; interweaving of strands of hair on a pre-determined track for Cornrows; and intertwining of strands of hair for Twist. Braids can be done on all hair types. Braids are healthy when done on a healthy head of client’s natural hair but can be damaging when used on someone whose hair is already damaged with chemicals or too much stress. Braids should not be held tight on the client’s scalp as this leads to traction alopecia but they should be held firmly so they don’t drop off from the client’s head as this leads to embarrassing moments.

EUROPEAN SINGLE BRAIDS worldofbraiding

EUROPEAN SINGLE BRAIDS worldofbraiding

What makes a difference between types of braids varies from how a braid is sectioned or partitioned ready for the strands and the hair extensions type used for the braids.
The single plaits box braids are the oldest and most popular of all the braiding styles. For the Single plaits box braids, what you need is a medium sized sectioning of client’s hair partitioned into any of the 3 major types of designed shapes – squares, arch /half-moon or triangles. These are then braided with a medium size of kanekalon or synthetic hair extensions. It is suggested that you add about the same size of extensions to the hair as the section you have created. If you add too much extension to a section, this will become too heavy, outweigh and over power the client’s hair. If you add too little extensions, your hair overpowers the extensions and tends to look rough. As usual we recommend you work with a client who wears natural hair as this hair tends to hold braids better. This style has been made popular by Brandy in her days as Moesha in the sitcom.

FEATURES OF SINGLE PLAITS BOX BRAIDS HAIR EXTENSIONS

Type of hair extensions: Can be done with 100% Kanekalon /synthetic quality hair extensions. Some of the quality brands include: Xpressions, Nina, Outre etc as they look pretty and last long with maintenance and care. It is best if the hair extensions are treated into a technique we call “feather tips”. In this technique, the extensions can be cut into various lengths that is required by your client. You can also use the regular synthetic hair extensions – jumbo braids.
Uniqueness of this Hair Extension type: The benefit of the kanekalon hair extensions type is that it creates very good feather tips in the hair extensions which becomes lighter for the client to wear as against the general notion that this type of hair is heavy. This hair extensions type can be shampooed frequently without losing its shine/ lustre; can be used for swimming easily without getting tangled; hair dries naturally without heat, hair is sealed with hot water; hair texture can be changed easily into wavy, curly, crimpy, straight or unlimited styling options.
Client’s Hair type: Virgin Afro hair, Relaxed/chemically processed afro hair, Caucasian hair.
Benefit of hair style: Good volume on fine hair, easy care and styling for virgin afro hair. Instant length, beauty, versatile, can be styled to suit you. This type of hair style is better than damaging your hair with chemical treatments.
Caution** Do not use on clients with damaged thinning chemically processed hair as extensions gets too heavy for client’s hair and can lead to more hair damage.
Time to put in: Takes between 6 – 10 hours to do depending on how many stylists are working on the hair, how long the extensions is and how tightly packed the style is created.
Wear Duration: Between 4 – 12 weeks depending on individual client’s care, maintenance and discipline regime.

The more extensions you add to the strands the larger your hair strand will look and the better the strand of jumbo braids you will have. This style is currently very popular at the moment as it has been made glamorous by Solange Knowles.
