With the slogan – Natural Healthy Glamorous Hair – Joy has been a voice, an ambassador, a preacher and a leader in the field of Natural Hair Care. With so much lack of information and ignorance surrounding the Natural Black Woman’s hair, Joy took it upon herself to empower people with the knowledge and awareness of how to care for their natural hair as well as to create a business out of Natural Hair Care.

Trained students at World of Braiding

Realising that there were no institutions teaching natural hairstyles, Joy set up World of Braiding & Extensions – Natural Hair & Extensions Academy since 2002 and started practicing and teaching natural hair care.  With favourable reviews, Joy has helped women gain employment and set up businesses in natural hair care across the world with far reaching countries as United States, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Barbados, Caribbean  Countries to mention a few.  Joy believes that while there exist Hairdressing Schools and Cosmetology Colleges all over the world, these colleges only teach how to alter the natural hair with chemicals, ignoring how to maintain and care for the natural hair.  With this in mind therefore, Joy decided to offer understanding and care through education that can then help Black people to care for their natural hair better than altering it with chemicals.

World of Braiding & Extensions is the only internationally certified Academy with Habia CPD certification to teach natural hairstyles.

CAUCASIAN HAIR DAMAGE CAN ALSO BE SELF-INFLICTED

CAUCASIAN HAIR DAMAGE CAN ALSO BE SELF-INFLICTED

Wow, what a big business move we made by relocating our business about 40 minutes away from the hassle and bustle of metropolitan life in the City of London.  It was one of those moves you make with a clear hope that you are going to have a healthier, better quality life after the stresses associated with major city life.

So we moved into the heart of Essex in England but luckily for us, Southend-on-Sea is a very bubbly City.  It offers us the best of both worlds in the sense that we are close to London which is only a train ride away within 40 minutes; a tourist town where it is usually busy without any stress and to crown our fun; an exciting seaside town with all the trimmings – series of shopping malls all within walking distances, a train station within 2 minutes’ walk, a children’s adventure Island and a beautifully designed seaside beach within 2 minutes’ walk.

On carrying out our business research, we knew it was a City with less Black clientele – 5% to be close, and yet we were not worried as all the other factors above where okay and our business catered to all races.

naomi-campbell-bald

naomi-campbell-bald

So far our business move has brought me closer to a very interesting discovery. Self-inflicted hair damage is a problem for all-races. This is because prior to our move, my understanding of hair damage has been focused on Black hair where this is what you tend to read about a lot on the internet and in newspapers.  With a clientele of mostly Blacks at the time, I believed this to be true as well.  This is where our move to Southend-on-sea has brought me a different understanding of hair damage on all hair types. It has created a different experience regarding working with Caucasian hairtypes.

On this particular Saturday morning at about 8am, my telephone rings and I answer it.  Prior to this call, I was getting prepared for a Festival event in the neighbourhood where we had been invited to braid the hair of 200 young girls in professional FA Football so preparing and putting all the materials required in my bag was an absolute necessity. I was very busy and did not want to forget any item as in events of this nature; the least forgotten item may become what ruins the whole event.

So when this telephone call came, it was simply an inconvenience that was going to distract my morning.  All the same, I answered the phone and a man on the line asked the question “what time do you open your salon?” I told him the time which is 10am.  Then there came a heavy pause on the line which I could tell were signs of desperation. So I probed and enquired if he was okay. Then it all came out as he answered.

“We are in front of your salon, my wife desperately needs help with her hair extensions, and could you come and help us.”  I can tell a cry for help when I hear one and this was one of those times.  So I told him to wait for me as I was going to be with him within 5 minutes.

Yes he waited and when I got to him, what I saw was an absolute shock – a young Caucasian lady with the whitest coloured hair I have ever seen. This hair was damaged, stringy and platinum white. I was in shock for several minutes. My immediate reaction was a mutter underneath my breath – “here we go again” and this is because I have seen incidents like this several times over.

Bad glue gun hair extensions

Bad glue gun hair extensions

On checking the state of this hair, it was extremely short – less than 2 inches natural hair attached to a very long length hair extension. I asked her to sit down and tell me what had happened and how I could help. She had bleached and coloured her hair several times over which had damaged her hair and now she needed the length back so she had gone to get a hair extensions service from a salon where they had added all this volume and length of 30” extensions to her about 2” natural hair but it looked so ridiculously fake. The worst part was that they had used black glue to add this platinum white beach blond extension onto her hair which was very visible considering her hair was very short.

How could I help, I asked? She wanted me to take out the extensions because the black glue was very obvious and did not let the extensions look real which made her feel self-conscious and look extremely ridiculous.

On further discussions, I found out that she had bleached and coloured this hair several times which had completely damaged her hair making it become very short. In a bid to recapture her locks, she had gone on to add the glue gun type of extensions to an already damaged hair.  This method is very damaging and not encouraged especially for damaged hair.  So this method had finally ruined her hair beyond repair and now she wanted me to help her take out the glue as the person who put it in, did not know how to take them out.  This is what I call self-inflicted hair loss.

caucasian hair color

caucasian hair color

This is not a one-off experience.  Prior to this lady, I have seen so many hair loss problems among Caucasians caused by series of bleaching, colouring and additions of unrealistic hair extensions.  Most times, the hair comes in looking like spaghetti straws – absolutely lifeless and in colours that could be seen in the rainbow colours.  Some of the clients say to me, that they have coloured their hair so many times, that they have no idea what their natural hair colour looked like.  Put the television on and the number of adverts on hair colouring will get the message across, then walk into the beauty isle in any super market and you will be confronted with these colours. We have discovered too that nearly every Caucasian girl in Essex wants to be blond just like the girls in TOWIE (a television series called – the only way is Essex) hence the continuous drama just like the lady above.  I have seen instances where the extensions have been applied with bonding glue up to the hairline.  Another instance was where the glue was applied directly on the scalp to hold the hair together etc, etc.

britney spears damaged hair

britney spears damaged hair

There was also another major incident where this teenager walked in with her Mum. Her hair was so damaged, I had no idea what was on her head. It looked so frail, thin and extremely short that she used bobby pins to hold the hair together. She had bleached and coloured it so much that the hair was extremely lifeless and needed these pins to be held in place.  What they wanted from me was a wig and as is normal in Essex, she wanted a blond wig. At this time, we had not stocked blond wigs so she wanted to have any colour wig fitted on so she could decide on the design to choose from.  She sat down and we fitted a red coloured wig on her head. This wig was absolutely perfect on her head and the colour suited her face very well. The design also suited her so much; you would think it was her own hair. From the fit, her mother was so impressed, she told her daughter “This is really great!  You do not have to colour your hair any more as we can buy whatever colour you want in wigs without damaging your own hair.” Then it finally dawned on me that the hair colouring and bleaching was one of the major reason responsible for Caucasian hair damage and this has always been self-inflicted hair damage as the decision to colour comes from the wearer. And there are so many more of instances like this that I meet most days as I operate from Essex. This brought home the memory of Black women and hair relaxers which just like colouring, is causing most of the Black hair damage and yet is another case of self-inflicted hair damage.

TOP 10 HEALTHY OILS FOR THE NATURAL BLACK AFRO HAIR

TOP 10 HEALTHY OILS FOR THE NATURAL BLACK AFRO HAIR

By Joy Phido – Master Natural Hair & Extensions Educator, Consultant & Designer

Natural Afro Hair

Natural Afro Hair

Over 17 years ago when I fully got interested in commercial hair experience, I became more and more interested in finding out what is in our hair products and what will help it become healthy. This interest has helped me in my business of offering natural hair service to my children, friends and clients alike.

The height of my interest became more intensified when I started reading books on what is causing damage to the natural hair especially the Afro Black Hair and as someone who had chosen to practice and teach the Natural hair techniques, it was obvious that I had to understand products and how they help the hair stay healthy.  After continuing to read books, research on the internet, watching videos etc, the messages where complicated, confusing and challenging especially when you consider that most people are not focusing on working with the Black Afro hair type. I decided to invest time and money to take up trainings in the Natural Cosmetics manufacturing which I completed this February 2013 to qualify and earn my CPD in Natural Cosmetics manufacturing.

My understanding and continuous experience is that the more we embrace our natural hair, the more we should learn about natural hair products which work to give us best results. My training has exposed me to read more on the labels of hair products.  A major blow to my understanding was the continuous use of Petroleum in the ingredients of our products.  Extensive research and knowledge exposed the fact that Petroleum comes from what is also known as Rock Oil / crude oil. Due to its quick availability and cheap sources, these oils are used in the form of Mineral oils known as Paraffin and Vaseline.  This is a topic for another write up but for now, the truth is that we should look elsewhere for sources that work for our body without too much processing in the form of thousands of ingredients found in nature that can be used in hair, skin and food products. These ingredients work to make every hair type healthy.

While watching our videos and DVDs, we have shown our Hydration Moisturising Mix spray which is a natural oil mix and the questions we constantly get are what is the content of our oil mix.  This mix was made from my constant work with natural hair and the fact that I get good elasticity and quick moisturising result from these hair type instead of Braid sheen or heavy cream moisturisers. Below is a list of my 10 favorite ingredients in natural hair ingredient oils and what they provide for our hair.  Remember these are oil mixes which should only be used in the form of sprays and not as creams.  You can use any combination of the oils to create your mix depending on the benefits you are expecting.

TOP 10 HEALTHY OILS FOR YOUR NATURAL AFRO HAIR

1. Castor Seed Oil

castor oil seed

castor oil seed

castor oil

castor oil

This is a fatty, thick, sticky, liquid, stable oil which does not go rancid easily. It protects against weather and wind. It makes the hair shiny and provides water protection which is why it is a humectant.  It has anti-fungal properties which cleans the scalp, and help the hair follicles clear and prepare itself for better hair growth. Some people say it helps to grow their hair so apply it to eye lashes and to the hair temples to increase the thickness of thinning edges.

2. Jojoba Oil

jojoba oil

jojoba oil

This oil is the best oil for hair and skin.  Its properties are numerous to mention. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is the nearest to sebum which is nature’s natural oil attached to each strand of our hair. Jojoba therefore trick nature to think that it has produced enough sebum especially for black hair as our hair is naturally dry. Because it is very similar to your natural hair oils, jojoba oil can be used to balance oil production at the scalp, aiding overproducing glands that cause oily hair and also treats hair problems such as dandruff, seborrhoea, dry and damaged hair.  It has a very protective quality for hair as it is a humectant which helps it to hold moisture perfect for adding to damaged ends. It is easily absorbed by the skin and is used extensively in hair care. It softens and improves suppleness.  Jojoba is also non-greasy and will give your hair a healthy, natural shine and add volume to your hair.

3. Avocado/Avocado Oil

This oil is very rich with vitamins A, D, E, and contains more potassium than bananas. It is easily absorbed into the skin and hair and

avocado oil

avocado oil

avocado oil is a quick way to get multiple nutrients onto your scalp for improved hair growth.  Very good when the skin and hair is dry, tired and lacks lustre. It spreads well and very quickly and thoroughly absorbs, giving shine and softness.

4. Argan Oil

Argan oil

Argan oil

This oil is very rich in Omega 6 essential fatty acids which stimulate, protect and regenerates helping to make the skin and hair soft, supple and elastic. Argan oil will add shine, tame frizz, help straighten your hair, or enhance your natural curls. It is seen in the industry at the moment as one of the wonder oils to use as is noted in all mixtures – infused with Argan /Moroccan oil.

5. Olive Oil

Traditionally most natural vegetable oils are good for food, skin and hair and Olive oil is one instance where this is most prominent. It

is very rich oil in nutrients hence very prominent in Mediterranean diets.  Due to its fattiness is very good for dry hair, stops trans-epidermal water loss helping to maintain moisture making it a humectant. It has nourishing, softening and protective properties.  It is good for treating dry hair, dry damaged scalp, irritated and sensitive scalp.

6. Sweet Almond / Almond Oil

Almond oil

Almond oil

You will occasionally be confronted with Sweet Almond or simply Almond oil.  I usually buy anyone I find. You can take your time to understand what the difference really is but for hair, I love Almond oil.  By massaging a few drops of almond oil into your scalp adds a healthy glow to your hair.  It helps make your hair stronger, thicker and adds shine as well as nourishing and smoothing hair cuticles. Almond oil has also been known to facilitate hair growth, making it strong and thick and controls hair breakage.

7. Vegetable Glycerin

vegetable glycerin

vegetable glycerin

Natural Hair products containing vegetable glycerine act as strong humectants—meaning, they attract and bind water to themselves acting as a remedy for hair problems. Vegetable glycerine also creates a layer of oil over the hair strand, thus aiding in the retention of moisture.  To stay away from frizz in curly and afro hair, regular application over time is beneficial as it does not allow the hair to dry out or tangle.  Glycerin for hair is really amazing. Try combining it with aloe vera juice to create an even better moisture spritz!

8. Sunflower Oil

This oil contains high levels of Omega 6 essential fatty acid, has high vitamin E and high lecithin content – a natural emulsifier.  It has a

sunflower oil

nourishing effect on the skin and hair. It absorbs quickly without leaving a sticky feeling. It is also used to treat seborrhoea and structurally damaged hair. Sunflower oil in a product helps other active ingredients to absorb quickly.

9. Grape Seed Oil

grapeseed oil

Grape Seed oil is high in Omega 6. It is a long oil and so offers excellent lubrication qualities.

10. Neem Oil

Has a very powerful antibacterial and antifungal property which is very useful for the hair. Treats head lice and dandruff.

neem oil

I have tried to concentrate on oils that are easily seen and readily available to buy from Natural food shops and markets. As some of these ingredients are indigenous to other countries, I suggest you buy them from “fair trade,” companies where the people who make the product are paid fair wages!

Where possible, use Organic and unrefined versions of these ingredients as they work best and ensure the retention of nutrients.

However, any version is better than applying chemicals or petroleum products on your hair.

Are there other oils you have worked with that give you great results?  Why not share with us some of your personal experiences on oils and what they do for you.

START WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE:  Hair grows from inside and hair is a fiber that is part of our cells which grows from the subdivision of our cells in the hair follicles.  For this reason, we need natural healthy food that the body can easily break down for digestion in order for our hair to grow.  The foods we need for hair growth are fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts and wholemeal foods.

2. PLENTY OF WATER:  Due to the unhealthy lifestyles we are forced to live with – synthetic foods, processed foods, genetically

modified foods, toxins in the air etc, the body is constantly battling with toxins which do not encourage healthy body for hair growth.  To solve this problem, the body therefore needs lots of water for detoxification, lubricate food for digestion, aid digestion and reproduce the cells for hair growth.  We also need lots of water to hydrate the hair so it does not become too dry.

moisturising products

3. NATURAL & MOISTURISING HAIR PRODUCTS:  After the hair has grown out of the follicles, it needs care in order to avoid breakage.  The natural Afro hair is coily and naturally dry due to lack of sebum travelling down the hair strands.  Due to the coils and dryness of the Afro hair, it tangles itself and breaks easily with little manipulation.  Use of wrong products such as sulphates in Shampoos, silicons in conditioners, chemical relaxers, dyes and use of heat etc cause the hair more dryness which lead to more breakage. Start using natural moisturising oils to help make the hair supple, easy to manage and grow quicker.  These oils include jojoba oil, castor oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, shea butter, argan oil, broccoli seed oil etc.  They contain active properties that help stimulate blood flow and make hair grow as well as contain moisturising properties that make the hair manageable and easy to care for.

4. MANIPULATION:  When the natural hair has grown out, it requires less manipulation to avoid breakage.  Handle with care as natural

hair is a very delicate fibre that breaks easily. Less manipulation means less combing, pulling, tugging, tucking, ponytails, clips, blow dryer, flat irons, tight braiding, tight weaving etc.

5. PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES:  When the hair has grown out, you do not need to leave it hanging out all the time as it requires time and attention to care for it.  You need healthy natural protective hair styles to retain your length and style.  These styles include 2 strand twist, single plaits, cornrows, braids with extensions etc to help to grow and retain its length.  These styles reduce  manipulation.  Remember not to hold the scalp too tight as it leads to hair loss and alopecia.

TOP 7 REASONS FOR BLACK WOMEN’S HAIR LOSS /DAMAGE

TOP 7 REASONS FOR BLACK WOMEN’S HAIR LOSS

/DAMAGE

&

HOW TO PREVENT THEM

Naomi Campbell hair loss

Naomi Campbell hair loss

I constantly get bombarded with questions as to what is causing Black women’s hair to break so much, get damaged and often times leading to hair loss.  I encounter women from all over who give me so many reasons for their hair damage and I will like to share some of these reasons with you and aim to offer some solutions on how we can prevent some of these problems.

It is a known fact that we are a race obsessed and addicted with hair beauty.  Our obsession & addiction with hair comes mostly from the fact that we cannot manipulate our hair as easily as other races can with their hair and this in itself puts us in a difficult situation.  This addiction has therefore put us in a position of love/hate with our hair as we do not seem to understand it.  It has turned us into Slaves for our hair as we will do anything to have the image we hope from our hair hence we really do not care in most cases how much we contribute to damaging it.  Our obsession has turned us to spend whatever money we can lay our hands on into creating the hairstyle we seek.

Surveys have shown that the Black woman spends 6 times more than any other race on hair. It has also been shown that we rate our

black women images

black women images

hair more important than most things in our lives including forfeiting paying our mortgage or getting an eduction in order to have the good hair we seek. See Good Hair Documentary by Chris Rock.  A survey from www.marketresearch.com confirmed that by 2013 we will spend $4.2 trillion on hair and accessories.  It has also been confirmed that the hair loss industry is worth more than $9billion.

But why are we spending so much money on hair and if this is the case are we achieving the good hair that we seek?

By the nature of our hair, we have discovered that our hair is unique and has qualities such as: dryness, frizz, matted strands, tangles, shrinkage, breakage, lacks moisture and ability to absorb moisture etc.  These qualities of the Black hair are the reasons we generally seek so much solution to our hair problems. But are these problems natural or are they man-made problems that we have been forced to inherit?

In the process of seeking solutions, we resort to everything we can think of to help us such as: straightening with hot comb; blow dryers; flat irons; chemical relaxers; perms; Brazilian & Japanese blow dry; colour treating; Braids with synthetic & human hair; Weaves with synthetic, human and virgin human hair;  twisting; adding different types of extensions etc etc.  All these styling – excessive manipulation, heating, chemicals etc all lead to one thing our hair – Hair damage & Hair loss.

When damage and hair loss has occurred, we further go on more trial and error spree and have to spend so much more money to try and understand how to solve our problems.  Most times the problem starts from the people styling our hair; suggesting products; training us in hairdressing /cosmetology schools, manufacturing our products and advising us about our hair as these people generally do not have any idea what our hair really is.

Here are the Top 7 reasons for hair loss & damage in Black women & how we can prevent them:

1. DRYNESS & LACK OF MOISTURE:  The Black hair is generally dry because when it grows from our scalp, it coils

dry Afro hair

dry Afro hair

around itself.  This coily nature of our hair does not allow the natural sebum which is the natural oil from our scalp to travel down the strands of our hair.  We are therefore expected to constantly hydrate and moisturise our hair in order to bring in moisture and stop the dryness.

Rather what we then do as Black people is to apply more heat to our hair and this heat continues to make the hair dryer hence leading brittle hair that  snaps and breaks at the least touch.

SOLUTION: Start hydrating your hair today and watch out to see how it will start detangling itself when you try to comb it without breaking.  A simple mixture of bottled spring water and natural oils will do a great job than any expensive over the counter product.

2. USE OF EXCESSIVE HEAT:

blow drying hair

blow drying hair

I hear people saying that they cannot work with their hair unless it is completely blow dried and looking bone straight.  Unfortunately these people are not helping themselves with their hair health. As mentioned above, anything that takes away moisture from the Afro Hair is not a friend of this hair type.  It simply dehydrates the hair and allows it to be prone to breakage. Breakage most times is what people see but really cannot explain what led to the breakage.   Breakage is the reason our hair does not retain length and the problem we face is length retention rather than hair not growing.

SOLUTION: Stop the heat; apply more water oil solutions into your hair and it will be a lot easier to manipulate.

3. DAMAGING INGREDIENTS IN OUR HAIR PRODUCTS:

There are people who have never deliberately tried damaging their hair but continue to notice that no matter how good a product claims, they still notice that their hair is dry, brittle, difficult to comb and style or grow.  The problem is not usually the fault of the client.   This is one of the biggest mis-selling and cons in the general hair industry and in particular the Black hair industry. Our biggest enemies are in the gentlest looking glossy advertised products in our bathroom such as the shampoos, conditioners, hair creams etc.  This is one area where I am most passionate about as clients are being conned constantly into parting with their hard earned money only to end up with problems they were hoping to solve.  I will be writing more on this particular point as this is an area where my enquiries most come from.

various shampoos

various shampoos

SOLUTION: In the meantime, stay away from most shampoos, conditioners and creams and stick to the ones that say – Sulfate-free shampoos, Silicon-free conditioners and creams/ moisturisers that have as part of their ingredients natural items that you can relate to.

4. HARSH & POISONOUS CHEMICALS IN OUR HAIR RELAXERS:

Due to the above problems that the damaging ingredients in our shampoos and conditioners have caused and also with the image expectations we tend to build for ourselves especially in civilised world; most of us end up relaxing our hair with very harsh poisonous chemicals – Sodium hydroxide, ammonium thioglycolate, formaldehyde etc.  These chemicals do not help us in any form.  This is a topic I have personally taken upon to research and read about.  This is by far one of the biggest reason for our hair loss.  It gets more complicated as it permanently depletes our strands of hair of its protein content.  It gives an illusion of easy to manage hair but our women still end up asking to wear extensions in the form of Braids and weaves after completely making their hair weak and vulnerable with relaxers.  You would expect that after a chemical relaxer process that Black women will be happy to show off this relaxed new hairdo.  Unfortunately this is not usually the case.  They go further to add extensions in the form of Braids & Weaves which then beggars the question, why did you relax your hair.  This is double jeopardy and stress on this fragile strand of hair. I have no idea what the purpose of a relaxer is if you will still end up in weaves, braids & extensions.  Please take your time and think your actions to yourself.  If you wear Braids, Weaves etc on a natural base of hair, you will have good textured hair to add your extensions and the hair is usually able to take the pressure but when it has already been weakened with chemicals and you add extensions, you deliberately set your hair for damage and hair loss. These poisonous chemicals also sip into your blood streams as has been proven by so many researches due to the natural function of the skin with the ability to breath with the example of cigarettes patches and exhale with the example of sweating. You are not helping yourself with this self- inflicted damage and the only reason this form of manipulation for Afro hair exist is because it is the only quick way other races can think of solutions for the Black hair.  See the Book, Hair Bible by Philip Kingsley.

SOLUTION: Time to stop these poisonous chemicals which cause you nothing more than hair loss and health problems.

5. TIGHT AND UNCOMFORTABLE HAIR STYLES:

tight braids

tight braids

While I may be an educator on natural hair styles, I am completely aware of the damage that hair stylist are inflicting on clients with some of these hair styles.  This is such a problem in our society as untrained illiterate hairstylist believes that hair beauty equals tightness on the scalp.  They have no idea what consulting with clients mean or what it involves to match a client’s hairstyle with their natural hair features.  Most clients complain that a basic hairstyle that should not require too much force and stress ends up causing so much pain that they end up taking the hair out.  This is most times made worse when this client has probably damaged her hair with chemical relaxers and now wants to hide her hair damage with extensions.

SOLUTIONS: As a hair client, please seek professional service and be willing to pay for the expertise and advise that your professional natural hair stylist offers. Also make it clear to your client when a hair style is making you uncomfortable.

As a hair stylist, please take up training and get your knowledge, experience and education up to speed so you do not continue to contribute to causing more hair damage and hair loss to your clients. I am tired of hearing about stylist who only wants to sit by their computers and learn from youtube.  My advice to you is that no one is going to sit on youtube and give you all the knowledge you need to be a good professional hairstylist completely free.  If they do, there is something they are trying to sell to you. Also remember that what we do is not taught in Hairdressing & Cosmetology schools so you need specialist training like we offer at World of Braiding & Extensions’ School of Professional Natural Hair & Extensions Business.

6. USE OF DAMAGING HAIR ACCESSORIES:

For example Lace wigs: We tend to follow trends blindly as a race. The trend that brought the lace wig also brought with it lots of hair loss and hair damage.  Lace wigs were originally made for cancer patients who had lost all their hair due to chemotherapy.  I have attended to lots of clients and know friends who followed this fashion which has now caused them so much hair damage and in some cases irreparable damage.  As is expected with most fashion trends, I always say to my clients to weigh /consider the beauty and health consequence of a hair style. I had clients who desperately wanted to follow the fad trend as well and I am glad they listened to my sound advice.  Most stylists again simply want to have money in their bank account and do not care about advising their clients.

SOLUTION: Watch every hair trend and seek professional advice before taking them on.  They may cause you a lot of damage in the long run.

If you find you have a stylist who is not prepared to advise you when need be, please stop using this person and move on to someone who will.

I will also recommend to clients that you learn to listen as well because there are those who simply are prepared to do whatever it takes to have a certain look without caring about the consequences and the health hazards it presents.  For example, there are currently people wearing layers and layers of Virgin human hair at all cost.  Please look at the health of your hair before subjecting yourself to this self-inflicted pain as a time will come when there will be no hair for you to stitch the hair extensions unto.

Other accessories to avoid include tight ponytails, iron hair pins and clips, less tugging, pulling, tucking etc.

7. WATCH YOUR FOOD INTAKE:

healthy foods

healthy foods

Due to the unhealthy lifestyles we are forced to live with – synthetic foods, processed foods, genetically modified foods, toxins in the air etc, our body is constantly battling with toxins and stress which do not encourage healthy body for hair growth.  Hair grows from inside and hair is a fiber that is part of our cells which grows from the subdivision of our cells in the hair follicles.

SOLUTION: To solve this problem, we need natural healthy food that the body can easily break down for digestion in order for our hair to grow.  The foods we need for good hair growth are fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts and wholemeal foods.

We also need lots of water for detoxification, lubrication of food for digestion, aid digestion and reproduce the cells for hair growth.  At least 2.5litre water every day.

HOW DO I MAKE MONEY

HOW DO I MAKE MONEY?

Joy Phido’s Top 9 tips on how to make your own money.

I get series of enquiries every day from people who want to take on training that gives them skills to help them create a better life for themselves and their families.  Out of these series of enquiries comes one of the most frequently asked question (FAQ) “How do I make money?”  Ironically, this is a common question on everyone’s lips.  It is a question that defines life itself as we all want to know how to make money because having money is an absolute necessary part of life.

Why is making money such an important part of life and why do we need money? We need money because it makes the world go round so there should be no pretence or denying the need for us to make money.

Getting rich in business

Getting rich in business

“People go to work with the aim to make money and people set up business with the aim to make money. People take up trainings, attend schools /universities, take up courses and travel the world etc with the hope to gain knowledge and skills that help them earn good money to lead a successful life.”

Money therefore is a very important topic that affects us all in the sense of what it can do for us.  Unlike other topics of life that offer training and guide for example food, health, fashion, hair, travel, make-up, technology, engineering etc, unfortunately there is no training that prepares you on how to make money or how to spend money wisely.  There is no School of Money that teaches you how to make money, handle money, protect money, care for money etc.  Money is a secret topic that no-one talks about. It is not taught in schools or universities as all the teachers would have been rich and not need their jobs. If solution to money problems were written in books, instruction manual or information packs etc, we would all have bought these pack and become rich without having to go through the stresses of trying to discover how to make money for our very existence. Money is simply taken for granted.  You either have it, keep struggling to have it or simply don’t have it.

The truth is the blueprint of how to make money is one of the mysteries of life as it has been hidden away from all of us so we continue to search for ourselves, struggle, trial & error, make mistakes; learn from it; take another route and try something different; fail; start again; achieve by getting really rich in the process or sometimes die along the way without achieving anything.  There are simply no guarantees to whatever route you choose to make money.

My life experience with reality is that no one is going to sit you down and teach you how or give you the key to make money as money in itself is power and no one wants to share power that they can keep for themselves.

According to an internet search, statistics have it that since the 1990s in US, 40 percent of the increased wealth went into the pockets of the rich minority, while only 1 percent went to the poor majority.  From 1977 to 1999, the after-tax income of the richest 20 percent of American families increased by 43 percent, while that of the poorest 20 percent decreased 9 percent, allowing for inflation. The actual income of those living on the lowest salaries was even less than 30 years ago and this story carries on.

If you do not know how to create wealth, the chances of you being able to run away from poverty are unlikely to be the case.  If you were not born into wealth, to create wealth like every skill of life, requires training, information and guide.

This is why when I set up my business in 2004, I made it my mission to help people not only gain a skill but know how to use it to help them make money.  It is this mission that has brought me a variety of people who continuously ask me this question over and over.  “When I finish your training, can you guarantee that I will make lots of money?”

To answer this question, I will take you into some of my personal experiences with money.

For various reasons, I have also been very curious in finding out how to make money for as long as I can remember – I was very aware that I was born into a poor home at an early age; I come from a poor community; I married poor and I have not been able to

accumulate wealth in my continuous search for it yet.  As a teenager, I had read a lot of intriguing books that gave me hope on how to achieve success in life despite my personal circumstance – such as – A woman of Substance – by Barbra Taylor Bradford; Kane & Abel – by Jeffrey Archer; Power of Positive Thinking – by Norman Vincent Peale etc etc and so I continue to hope and explore.

My immediate story to this article comes from my circumstance in 2002 when I became very desperate to make money to better my situation.

I had just been made redundant from the company I worked for – MCI Worldcom (a US telecoms company in the City of London) and I had also just discovered that I was pregnant with my 3rd child.  These two simultaneous events made me realise I was in serious financial trouble.  The reason this became very clear is because I live in Western world where you are encouraged to buy everything on credit especially when you have a well-paying job.  With MCI Worldcom, I had a good job so I had also become a victim of the normal process which I prefer to call Western credit disease – I had a mortgage on a big house, furniture on credit, kitchen, conservatory, all the trimmings and accessories that make life comfortable in addition to the usual bills that follow – electricity, gas, telephone, petrol in the car, holidays etc etc.  I had 2 young children who had needs and was now on my third child.  All would have been okay until now that my big salary has stopped as I had lost the job.  I was in trouble waiting to face all the creditors and my fate.

This is the reality of Western civilisation – The capitalistic credit system where we are made to go through life on borrowed line – credit

credit cards

credit cards

cards – mortgage, insurance, store cards, multiple credit cards, car loans, student loans, equipment loan, hire purchase etc.  If you are on a high income, Banks, credit card companies, store cards etc all give you a large credit line, and if you are on a low income, you are given a low credit line.  You practically live a lie by buying everything on credit and pay back in little sums.  Your whole being and existence is placed at someone else’s mercy as the minute something drastic happens such as a change in your personal circumstance – your source of income disappears through redundancy, unemployment, job loss or you fall ill and stop working etc, everything you once knew disappears. Then you encounter the evils and devils of the system that will turn your regular happy life into a living hell.  Like sharks waiting for its prey, all the lenders and creditors will start appearing for their pound of flesh and your very existence as is known with free spirit then disappears.   We all live on a money time bomb as a cut on your source of income automatically blows you off the surface of the real world as we know it.

I was no exception as I knew the creditors will stop at nothing until they get everything I had acquired with their money and I was made destitute both physically and mentally – the house, car, clothes, gadgets and equipment etc etc.  There was no hiding place as this is the fate of the Western world debt disease. I was sent nasty letters, threatened with bailiffs and heart wrenching phone calls etc that breaks even the strongest of spirits and in the end, I was expected to become a shadow of the person I used to be.  It is a nasty experience to undergo.

My situation was bad and desperate and I needed to have a job but being pregnant and with 2 young children, it was difficult to find a job that will pay enough to cover child care which is another unimaginable expense in the West.  Childcare is more expensive than paying a mortgage for a big house. Before taking on a job, you have to consider who will look after your children and how much you will have to pay to get that service. I knew the job I wanted was near to impossible so I needed to help myself to create a job that would give me money and flexibility to be at home with my children – ability to work from home.

This was when my story started becoming more interesting.

In continuation with the messed up capitalist system, I made one of my first major investment mistakes.  I was desperate and went on the internet to look for businesses that could let me work from home.  I found one with a pyramid company – Herbal Life.  To cut a long story short, I invested all my redundancy money with the hope to make money for my family. To add insult to injury, I again got sucked in with the well-designed fancy marketing gimmick machine which entices, attracts, and invites the ordinary, innocent, gullible, person to fall into their trap. I ended up losing every money I invested in addition to additional money from my credit cards.  I was stuck with products worth thousands of ££££ that no one wanted to buy.

Now my financial woes had no end as I was in bigger trouble than when I started – I had no money, no job, lost all my savings and redundancy pay, huge mortgage to pay, loads of other unending bills and 3 young children to feed.

Then things changed slowly.  I love reading as reading helps me go into a world where I have control over my thoughts. I had read a book while with Herbal Life – “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  This book guided and urged me to look into myself, my passion and hobbies and that I could turn them into my business. It went on to advise that as these hobbies are my passion, I will work with them without pressure and they will not feel like I was working.

I have always loved and worked with hair all my life but had not thought of using it as a business.  This was when I knew I had to make changes and be serious with my life as I had no other option or choice to take in my situation.  I needed to make desperate decisions to protect my children’s future.

I took my children’s savings and took up professional training in hair. I travelled the world in order to understand hair better, to be the best,   gain up to date knowledge with the current trends in the industry and offer the best service to my clients.  On completion, I set up my own business and this was how I was able to make my own money and changed my life.

“Fighting poverty and debt for me is a personal war as I know my experience is the same with most people in the Western world. This is why I make it my business to answer questions from my students about “how to make money”.  It is a personal choice to help my students who are mostly women and mothers who are in the situation I was in to aim to achieve prosperity with hair business so as to make money for their children and loved ones.”

My experience, understanding and dealings of debt are not to run away from it as this is the intention of the “powers that create debt”.  The ultimate aim of debt is to break you so you lose out on your right to exist.  Once your mind has been engaged with debt, you become fearful and scared, you shrivel, shrink, lose control of who you are and eventually your spirit disappears and you become a shadow of who you are.

The system that create debt is not built to help you recover as you are further enticed to take up more loans to pay for existing debt and the cycle never stops.  Fighting with debt is a terrible burden as it sucks into your very existence and kills your spirit and soul leaving you to deal with low self-esteem, insecurity, depression, lack of confidence, bankruptcy, schizophrenia, mental disorder, madness etc and finally you either get locked up in a mental institution or you die wretched.

Creditors do not give you advice on how to make money because you are a money making machine to them – the fees, the penalties, interest etc.  This is why the banks declare billions every year and the source of their money is mostly from ordinary people. The strain and pressure from debt jeopardizes everything you care most about – your relationship, your marriage, your health, your sanity, your freedom, your life etc.  Debt is a disease just like cancer – it spreads, imprisons and numbs the mind stopping you from any ability to think freely, recreate and be your own person.  Debt simply puts you in a mental prison as it turns you into a vulnerable wreck which is afraid of even your own shadows.

My dreams and hope for every woman is to stay away from debt and where you have been sucked in through ignorance or lack of choice, learn to break free from this trap and prison and stay strong and true to who you are as this is the only way to get out of debt.

From my experience above, I learnt that training to gain control of my natural skills and abilities gave me back my freedom and free

passage to create my own job and money. Never stop believing in who you are and seek help from close family and friends to take up a training that puts skills into your hands.  With skills, you gain back control of who you are and this becomes your ticket to debt free life. Avoid spending any money until you have earned it as this takes away the extra pressure of adding on more debt.

According to an internet research on poverty; “A great number of Americans suffer from poverty and hunger. According to the statistics of the US government, over 32 million citizens, or 12.7 percent of the total population of the country, live under the poverty line. The incidence of poverty is higher than in the 1970s, and higher than in most other industrialized countries.”

Western world may be civilised and lands of opportunities, but it is also a land full of doom and gloom; it is also a land where dreams die young and are killed prematurely. It is a land where greed and injustice is hidden in the jargon and glorified name of the law.

My story and journey from above carried on with my husband also losing his job, was made bankrupt, we lost the big house and we had to start our lives afresh. I refused to give in, believed in myself, carried on with my dreams, vision and hope for everyone and today live to tell the story where the future is very bright.  If I could fight debt and live to tell the story, I believe everyone else can.

This is why here at World of Braiding & Extensions, we make it our business to empower you with skills that help you create your own job where you can start by working from home; looking after your children and putting your money in your purse. As a mother, my experience of struggling with job loss and redundancy is the reasons I chose to teach women in particular to gain back control to their own lives as every woman deserves the right to have money to spend on her children and loved ones. Going by my experience, I do not wish the pain I went through on another woman and this is why I am happy to share my Top 7 Tips on How you can Make your own Money.

What it Money?

spending money

spending money

To get us started, we need to understand what the definition of MONEY is? According to Merriam Webster dictionary – money serves as a medium of exchange universally accepted in return for goods and services.  Money acts as a measure of value etc etc.

My personal understanding is – Money is a medium exchanged while sharing a service, product or knowledge. Money is created from the energy we invest in the right place and at the right time.

BENEFITS OF MONEY?

  • We need money to provide us with the basic necessities that we need in life.
  • Money buys you the things you desire in life.
  • We need money to create a better life for ourselves – training, education, information, knowledge etc
  • We need money to travel and see the world and understand how other societies operate so we can compare and learn from them.
  • We need money to live in a descent home, feed ourselves with quality meals, take care of our health, have clothes on our back etc.
  • We need money to be able to help other people who are less privileged in life.  Without money our life is bleak especially if you live in the Western societies where there are bills for everything as you  cannot pay your bills so you are frozen during winter, cannot move from one place to the other, end up in a poor home, poor neighbourhood etc etc.

HOW DO I MAKE MONEY?

MY TOP 9 TIPS ON HOW TO START MAKING YOUR OWN MONEY

  1. START WITH A REALISTIC PASSION WITH A MISSION TO HELP

Go back into yourself to re-discover your natural talents, skills, hobbies and passions.  What are those things you love to do that makes you feel your best or feel good inside about yourself.  What are those skills that you share with your family and friends that they love to get from you and yet you think is of no value to anyone. Your passion is that hobby that you are most likely to do without making any complaints at all whenever you are asked to do it. This is the hobby that we are going to turn into a business and because you are passionate about it, you do not notice when you are doing it and this is what will help you become successful when you turn it into a business.

2. CHOOSE A SKILL YOU CAN SHARE

While deciding on the hobby or natural talent that you have, make sure it is something that people will be happy to take from you for a fee.  Would you be happy to buy from you?  Remember it should not be a hobby that no one will love to share with you. Example includes: maybe you love to bake cake; you love to wear make-up; you love to sing; you are good at organising events and parties; you love to see people co-ordinate their clothes; you love to cook; you love to see people wear beautiful and healthy hair etc. It should also not be a skill that will take forever to perfect but a skill that you can pick up easily.

3. RESEARCH EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN SKILL

Find out everything there is to know about your chosen hobby or natural talent that we are going to turn into a skill.  Is it something that people really desire?  Is there a lack of it in your community? What are the competition of your hobby in your community?

4. INVEST AND TRAIN TO BE A PROFESSIONAL IN YOUR FIELD

You have found out a lot of things from your research.  Do something about it.  Information is the key to knowledge.  Take up training and education to get yourself ready and to be good in what you want.  “It is easy when you know how”. If you don’t train, you will never know how it is done properly and professionally. You will find that you will end up  struggling for years to find a solution to a problem that could have taken a day or a few weeks because you refused to take up training. Remember the money you put into training yourself comes back to you as you become the best in your field and everyone respects your opinion and comes to you for your service.  Money invested in training yourself is one of the best investment you can make in yourself.  Your investment helps to expand your knowledge and buy you a better future. It gives you lots of edge over people who refuse to take up training.

Other ways of getting information is to read, read, read.  Read up on other people’s experiences, successes, failures etc.  There are books on every experience in life.  Develop a habit of reading to prepare your mind for success.  While food nourishes the body, books nourish the mind with ideas.  Ideas are what we want in order to grow.  Ideas are what differentiate us from animals.  Ideas are what keep us thinking and we are what we think.  Give your mind the wrong idea and you turn out with wrong reality.

5. PRACTICE YOUR SKILL AND USE FRIENDS & FAMILY AS MODELS

Whenever you finish your training, remember if you do not take your new experience into action, you will likely lose it and it will become a waste of money.  Practice the skills, knowledge and information you have gained from your training. Apply it constantly. Repeat it over and over again.  It will feel awkward at first.  This is normal.  Remember every expert was once a beginner.  You have to practice your skill to perfect it.  During your practice stage, offer free service sometimes, offer discounts, be willing to share your knowledge freely etc and this will bring you lots of clients who will believe in you.  Experience cannot be bought so you have to put your hands into practising your skill.  As you are perfecting your skill, make sure you keep portfolio of your work as this is what your clients want to see to believe you.

6. START SHARING/ SELLING YOUR SKILLS WITH OTHERS.

Selling or sharing your skill will come to you as a natural process. Remember you invested money into the training and so you have to recover your money back.  This is the stage that you then start making money.  The more you sell your skill, the more money you make.  How do you want to sell your skill; who do you want to have as your clients; how often do you want to sell your product or service etc etc.  Remember to be noticed by potential clients; you have to market your skill or product. The more people are aware of your skill, the more they will want your skill and the more money you will make.

7. STAY FOCUSED – MENTAL AND PHYSICAL

Now that you know what you are doing, there will be distractions from every source you can imagine.  Stay focused and strong – mental and physically. Watch what goes into your body as food or information.  In order for us to achieve our dreams, we have to be physically and mentally healthy.  We are responsible for what goes into our body and mind.  Take absolute control of what you expose yourself to.  In order for our life to progress forward, we have to be in good physical and mental health and we cannot be in good health if we are not watching our food intake, exercise, relaxation etc.  Only a healthy body, mind and soul can think, plan and act to achieve success.

8. NEVER STOP SEARCHING FOR BETTER & QUICKER SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS YOU ARE SOLVING

This is what they call research and development. (R&D).  This is where most people stop being relevant in business.  Do not stop learning, asking questions, researching, looking at your competition to see what new things they are adding to their businesses etc. Customers like to work with people who are up to date and not people who stay stuck in time.  Be consistently up to date and deliver latest trends to your clients. This will help draw more clients to you but remember you need to constantly seek knowledge to be ahead of people around you. PLAN YOUR LIFE instead of LEAVING IT TO CHANCE and this can be done by keeping track of what you are doing and what you plan on achieving.

9. CONTINOUSLY FEED YOUR MIND WITH POSITIVE INFORMATION THROUGH READING.

Reading has helped me develop my mind continuously.  There is a saying that you start life education the day you stop going to school.  School or university does not teach you real life.  Real life you learn through experience but one of the best ways to learn is through reading about people you admire and how they achieved success. I admire Madam C J Walker and her achievement and made it my business to read about her. Other idols of mine are Anita Roddick of Bodyshop, Oprah Winfrey and a few others.  I have books on these people and constantly listen to Personal Development CDs which help me keep my mind on track.  An idle mind is the devils workshop so keep your mind on a positive track by feeding it with positive information.  This will help you discover your true mission in life and how you can help change other people’s lives for the better.  Remember making money without fulfilling a personal satisfaction with your soul leads to nothing.  Make sure the type of money you learn to make is one that you can look back on and be proud of your efforts.  Let it be one that you can pass on to your children and such that you can tell the world your source for that income.

Help make life exciting and a good experience for the next person you meet.  Make your natural gifting edify others you meet in your life and you will discover you would have achieved your life’s purpose.

My personal purpose is to share my knowledge, skill and experience with you in order for you to avoid making mistakes and to bring you success.  What are your dreams for 2013?  Would it be a year of you achieving your heart’s desires?  Would it be a year you come out of debt & poverty to take care of your life?

Is there any business ideas you will like us to help you with advise? We are always happy to help. Remember; Do not spend money unless you have earned the money. That way you will be free of debt eventually.
